Spring is a fine time to be in Arizona if you’re a golfer. In fact, Fountain Hills, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the Verdes communities are home to the highest concentration of world-class golf in all of Arizona. There are eight public courses and one private country club, with all of them featuring the most amazing vistas you can find anywhere in Arizona. Whether you’re looking for sweeping views, rich, rolling greens, and even some attractive golf packages, grab your clubs and mosey on over to where the air is clear to check out Arizona’s treasured golf courses.

Sonoran Desert Golf Trail The Sonoran Desert Golf Trail features eight spectacular desert golf courses set in Arizona's Lower Verde Valley, a lush desert environment with some of the Southwest's most unspoiled vistas. The courses are surrounded by breathtaking views of the McDowell Mountains and the Tonto National Forest. The courses are as follows:

Desert Canyon Golf Club Desert Canyon Golf Club’s 18-hole championship course is one of Arizona’s top golfing facilities.  It features elevated tees coupled with a variety of elevation changes. Though open, fairways play tight and prove challenging with strategically placed doglegs.

Eagle Mountain Golf Club  Located minutes from Scottsdale in the rugged McDowell Mountains of Fountain Hills, the Scott Miller designed Eagle Mountain Golf Club dramatically weaves its way through shaded box canyons and around majestic mountain peaks unique to this scenic corner of the Sonoran Desert.

Sunridge Canyon Golf Club  Designed by Keith Foster, SunRidge Canyon is widely considered one of the most picturesque and dramatic golf courses in the Southwest. It was selected No. 42 on Golf Magazine’s list of “Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S.”

Tonto Verde Golf Club  Offers two 18-hole courses designed by renowned golf course architects David Graham and Gary Panks to keep the natural contours of the land while offering challenges to golfers of all skill levels.  The Ranch course provides a challenge even for the most experienced golfer, but 7 different tee arrangements provide options for golfers of all ages and handicaps. The Peaks course is considered a friendly course off the tee, and challenging around the green.

Vista Verde Golf Club Just opening in 2006, Vista Verde is the newest addition to "The Verdes" courses. Designed by noted Arizona golf course architect Ken Kavanaugh, the course has outstanding vistas from every hole and is reminiscent of famed Pinehurst #2, with fun greens that fall off to surrounding chipping areas. The Verde Vista course has five sets of tees to present a challenge for every skill level, and has served as host to several Gateway Tour events. It is a state-of-the-art practice range and a course you can have fun playing again and again.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club  Developed by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, We-Ko-Pa (Yavapai for “Four Peaks”) is a daily fee golf facility that consists of two spectacular 18-hole layouts that are certain to challenge and inspire golfers of all levels. Additionally, there is a world-class practice facility to hone all aspects of your game and a full service clubhouse with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and of the Sonoran Desert. Just east of Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, We-Ko-Pa is located on land that will never be used for residential or commercial development, yielding dramatic views of the McDowell Mountains, Red Mountain, Four Peaks and the famous Superstition Mountains.

For more information on courses, packages, and seasonal discounts, visit the Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell Visitors Bureau golf page

The Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell region is well known for its awe-inspiring vistas, breathtaking Sonoran landscape, hiking trails and outdoor adventures. Nestled in the Verde Valley outside of Phoenix, the region is also home to a wide variety of things to do including weekend art tours, live music, and art festivals that draw audiences of all ages. And, as spring is coming into bloom, a variety of musical events will be taking place that are sure to please all types of music-goers! Don’t forget Friday night at Fort McDowell Adventures either, as it’s sure to win your heart over with Southwest campfire charm!

The Concerts In the Park series is a seasonal favorite, featuring a variety of different live bands each Sunday in the picturesque Fountain Park. Beginning in March, enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the park with friends, family, and a picnic as the opening acts begin performing at 1:00pm followed by the main performers playing from 2:30pm until 4:00pm. This year’s series begins March 6 and repeats weekly until March 27. Musical ensembles include The Spin Band (3/6), the Samba Project (3/13), The Scott Hallock Band (3/20) and Mex-Sal (3/27).  Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes and camera for an afternoon of outside fun!

Just ten minutes east of Fountain Hills is Fort McDowell, and as spring has sprung with musical lyrics in neighboring Fountain Park, Friday Night Franks is the best place to be at the start of the weekend at the Fort! From 5pm until 10pm, Friday Night Franks at Fort McDowell Adventures offers guests an exceptional campfire cookout experience in the Sonoran Desert. The event runs between Labor Day and Memorial Day, offering free admission to live entertainment, horseshoe throws and wagon rides. An old-fashioned wiener roast features $2 hot dogs, $3 beers and $2 s’mores. Franks is a widely popular event that draws audiences from all parts of the Phoenix area! The venue is appropriate for all ages, and beginning in Spring 2011, new “Choose Your Adventure” packages are available for great prices. Get your family together or bring your out-of-town guests for a memorable evening at the Fort!

Whether it's the Concerts In the Park series or Friday Night Franks at Fort McDowell, grab a blanket, your friends and a snack for some spring evenings under the stars! Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell certainly put fun on the map when looking for things to do in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas.

Spring is at our doorstep here in the Valley, and we’re especially thrilled as we look forward to the northeast Valley to come into bloom. Outdoor activities and things to do in the Phoenix area are soon to be abounding!  What’s great is that the scenic and vibrant Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell region is home to one of Phoenix’s best hiking and outdoor spots, McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Come on over and see it for yourself!

McDowell Mountain Regional Park is a Sonoran Desert jewel, rising to 3,000 feet along the western boundary and spanning 21,099 acres in the northeast Valley.  Sheltered in the lower Verde River basin, visitors can enjoy over 50 miles of multiuse trails, desert wildlife and spectacular plant life. The park also boasts stunning views of surrounding mountain ranges, which will  wow any outdoor enthusiast.

Get your hiking boots out and your hydration packs ready as the park has a full program schedule of activities for all to enjoy. For hiking enthusiasts, Thursday morning fitness hikes offered every week throughout February and March promise to keep up your cardio levels.  The hikes begin at 8:00am and generally last from 1 to 1.5 hours.

Specifically in February, don’t miss the fun things to do at the park such as bird watching, medicinal plant walks, and more.  On Thursday, February 17, the Adults Only Valentine’s Full Moon Hike (16 years and up) will start at 7:00pm, followed by the Family Friendly Full Moon Hike the next day, February 18th at 6:00pm.  Each hike is three miles and lasts about 2 hours. Experience the desert lit solely by moonlight!

Also in February are several desert wildlife and botanical experiences such as the Wildflower Photography for Newbies activity (on both Feb. 19 & 26 at 11:00am) and the Desert Wildflower Walks on February 25 at 11:00am. An especially fun thing to do in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area is the Reptile and Live Animal Feeding at the park’s Visitors Center held on February 26 at 1:00pm. Season visitors and local residents alike enjoy (and are awed by!) the live feeding of snakes, tarantulas and scorpions in the air-conditioned center! And if you’re not quite able to stomach the live feedings, stop in to the tortoise habitat, which is expected to show tortoises emerging from hibernation this March!

For more information on the fun outdoor things to do in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas, visit the Maricopa County Parks and Rec website here!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Have you made plans to pamper your sweetie or show your mate the depth of your love over a romantic dinner? If you live within the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas and are in search of Valentine’s Day things to do, a trip to Fountain Hills is a must for a memorable celebration in the name of Love.

In the early evening, make your way through breathtaking Sonoran scenery throughout the route to downtown Fountain Hills. Here you can take a stroll in Fountain Park and watch the world famous fountain spout to a mighty height of 360 feet amidst a signature Arizona sunset. The lush lawns and long shadows cast upon our scenic lake provide a relaxing and romantic setting to enjoy.

After time outdoors, stroll the Avenue, which hosts restaurants, jewelry stores and artist galleries (home to the original Fountain Hills Artists Gallery!) as well as one of Phoenix/Scottsdale’s newest culinary creations, Sofrita.

In celebration of the Day of Love, Sami Fine Jewelry will be offering a free pair of pearl earrings with every purchase. Be sure to also stop by the Fountain Hills Artists Gallery where you’ll be won over by some of the most unique designs, crafts and jewelry pieces found throughout the region—and at very reasonable prices. Keep in mind to also swing by the shops early—or on the weekend—before Valentine’s Day, as most retail shops close at 5pm on the Avenue.

For dinner, there are a number of restaurants to choose from. Stop into Sofrita, Scottsdale/Phoenix’s newest cozy culinary spot for tapas, sangria and wine. Owned and operated by Chef Anthony Redendo and his wife Carolyn, Sofrita dazzles and draws visitors from around the Valley with lively flamenco performances each month and top-notch Latin cuisine with savory wine pairings. Enjoy an intimate dinner with your partner amidst candlelight in this cozy bistro!

Also worth mention is locally owned Italian delight Terra Nostra, right along the Avenue as well. Here you’re greeted by crisp, white table linens and enticed by rich aromas from the kitchen. The cuisine does not fail to delight! Terra Nostra has the best views on the Avenue, with tables right in front of floor-to-ceiling windows as well as patio seating for full views of the fountain and Fountain Park.

Not yet ready to leave this charming desert oasis? Consider the upscale Radisson Hotel at Fort McDowell, which is offering guests “can’t-say-no-to” specials February 11-14. For complete details on “Romance Room” packages, visit the website.

Whether you choose to stay and indulge in the luxurious offerings at the Radisson, or if you must return to your own abode, be sure to take a moment to stargaze as the region has some of the best night sky views available in the entire Phoenix area!

So, what are you doing this Valentine’s Day?

Since 1988, the Great Fair has drawn millions of visitors from all over Arizona as well as the country to the quaint and charming downtown of Fountain Hills. Held the third full weekend each February, here you’ll find stunning artwork, designs and crafts showcased by more than 500 internationally known artists. The Great Fair is one of the seasonal experiences of Phoenix and Scottsdale you don’t want to miss! This year the Fair is held February 25, 26, and 27, from 10am-5pm each day. Better yet, it’s the largest arts and crafts show in Arizona!

At the Fair, you’ll discover an incredible array of arts, crafts and designs spanning from breathtaking landscape photography to elegant pottery and sculptures, glimmering jewelry, children’s clothing to fine artisan chocolate. Anything—and we mean anything—can be found while strolling among the hundreds of artist booths along the downtown’s Avenue of the Fountains. There is also live musical entertainment hailing from around the country as well as great eats and a robust beer garden available at the Fair as well. Better yet—each hour the world famous fountain spouts to a mighty height of 360 feet for everyone to see!

If you’re looking for stuff to do in February in the Phoenix or Scottsdale area, our advice is to start planning now. Hotels fill up early, but parking is abundant—and free!

If you’re looking for cultural things to do in the Scottsdale area, the Fountain Hills Community Theater (FHCT) is a robust pulse of top-notch entertainment in the Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell region. There’s no question that this scenic town boasts some of Phoenix’s greatest talent!
